Originally built in 1909, the renovated R.H. Stearns Department Store is a cornerstone of downtown Boston's former shopping district. The building, with high and intricately designed ceilings and sturdy Roman-style columns, was developed in the beaux art style of architecture, very common in the early 1900s.
It was added to Massachuesetts' Registry of Historic Places in 1980.
Today, the 11-floor Stearns community is home to 140 studio and one bedroom apartments for older adults and people with disabilities.
