Friend of the Elderly 2009
2009 Friend of the Elderly Awardee
Councilwoman, 9th District of Los Angeles
Councilwoman Jan Perry is in her second term as Councilwoman for the 9th District of Los Angeles, where she represents diverse and vibrant communities such as Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, and South Los Angeles. She began her term as Councilwoman in 2001, and she will be running for her third term in March 2009.
Councilwoman Perry earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern California School of Journalism, cum laude, and also received a Master’s degree from USC in public administration.
She began working in LA City government years before her first term of office. She served in a number of city capacities, and she eventually became a Council member’s chief of staff. She currently serves as:
- The chair of the Energy and the Environment Committee
- The chair of the Ad Hoc Homeless Committee
- Vice-chair of the Arts, Parks, Health, and Aging Committee
- Vice-chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Recovering Energy, National Resources, and Economic Benefit from Waste for LA (RENEW LA) Committee
- Member of the Housing, Community, and Economic Development Committee
- Member of the Ad Hoc Los Angeles River Committee
- Member of the Ad Hoc Stadium Committee
She was appointed by the mayor to represent the city of Los Angeles as a governing board member of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and was re-elected in January of 2006 by the Western cities to serve another four-year term. She also serves as the chair of the Exposition Light Rail Authority and is assistant president pro tempore for the Los Angeles City Council.
Councilwoman Perry has always been a friend of Angelus Plaza. She was very helpful in the recent syndication and refinancing of Angelus Plaza, and she supports RHF’s efforts to build several affordable housing communities within her district. She was also helpful in some very practical ways such as: having a stoplight installed at the crosswalk on Olive Street in front of Angelus Plaza and lengthening the time allotted for an individual to cross the street. At the request of Angelus Plaza residents, she facilitated installing the cutaways at the crosswalk on Hill Street for persons with disabilities. Chantal Denny, Angelus Plaza Senior Center Director, says that Ms. Perry has arranged for outdoor stages, chairs, and a dance floor for various events, holiday gifts and a visit from Santa, close to 400 videos the residents, and excellent student entertainment from various schools within her district.
Her office provided transportation for various field trips outside of the Los Angeles area. A member of her staff, Pamela Huntoon, Education Deputy, is always on the lookout for opportunities to host our residents to special exhibits at various museums, concerts, and stage performances, such as the Music Center and Disney Hall. She also sponsors an annual senior event; providing transportation, lunch, and entertainment for almost a thousand seniors in her district, including a few hundred of our Angelus Plaza residents. She has been an active member of the Angelus Plaza Advisory Council since 2001. Pamela Huntoon is present at all of the meetings. For three years, the Councilwoman and her staff have supported the Angelus Plaza Senior Activity Center’s annual fundraising event, City View, and the past two years she has allowed herself to be auctioned off for a lunch appointment and raised $2,325 in support of multicultural art opportunities for the elderly.
There are many examples of her caring and compassion. For example, she took a busload of our residents to visit one of their friends, a former resident, in a nursing home. She calls our Senior Center to inquire about residents that she hears have been ill or in an accident, and from time to time she even calls on residents who are ill. Chantal writes, “Sometimes it seems as if the residents of Angelus Plaza have been adopted by Jan. But Jan will tell you, it is they who have adopted her.”
RHF is pleased to present the 2009 Friend of the Elderly Award to Jan Perry, Los Angeles 9th District Councilwoman.
