Grace Jirovetz
Valley View Apartments
Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Grace Jirovetz is the mother of 14 children. She has lived at Valley View Apartments since June 2002.

Grace attends the Senior Center daily to prepare meals for the Meals On Wheels program. She served on the Senior Center Board for the past two years, she works at the gift shop, and she also works on crafts when she is at home.

Grace is the head of a singing group called, “The Silver Memories,” her group sings at nursing homes and other places as requested. Twice a week she walks to a nearby nursing home to play her keyboard while the residents are waiting for their meal. Sometimes she even gets them to sing along with her.

Grace also leads exercises at the nursing home twice a month. Peggy Thor, activity director at the North Ridge nursing home, says, “the emotional needs of the elderly are exactly the same as those felt by every human being at every age. They are but two: to be loved and to be needed. Happiness comes from having something to do, having someone to love, and having something to hope for, and Grace Jirovetz has provided all of these to our residents. She has, over the past couple of years, been an extension of the hands, hearts, and minds of the staff, and she is truly a part of our team here at North Ridge.”

Debbi Tasch, the program coordinator for the Manitowoc Senior Center, says, “I’ve known Grace Jirovetz for over 22 years. I can truly say that she is one of the most gentle, loving, and giving people I have ever known. She is a joy and a real asset to the Manitowoc Senior Center.” We are happy Grace calls Valley View Apartments her home.

Retirement Housing Foundation is pleased to recognize Grace Jirovetz as our 2008 Resident of the Year.
