What type of housing is Gaslight Apartments? Is it low-income housing?

Gaslight Apartments is a subsidized housing community for seniors. The term “subsidized housing” means that the rent is based on income. A resident of our community pays approximately 30% of their adjusted income for rent and the remaining portion of the rent is paid in the form of a subsidy. If a resident qualifies for a subsidy, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a U.S. government agency, will pay the remainder of the rent.

What is the age requirement for Gaslight Apartments?

Gaslight Apartments is for seniors 62 years of age or older or those people needing the accessibility features of our mobility impaired apartments. However, we do have a special waiver until April 2006 that allows us to offer apartments to seniors who are age 50 or older.

How many apartments are there?

We are a single story building with 30 apartments. There are 22 one bedroom apartments and 8 studios.

Do you have any two bedroom apartments?

No. Gaslight Apartments has only one bedroom apartments and studio apartments. The studios have a combined living and sleeping area.

How big are the apartments?

The one bedroom apartments are approximately 540 square feet and the studios are 415 square feet.

What is a mobility impaired apartment?

A mobility impaired apartment is an apartment that has special features that allow an individual, who has been certified as mobility impaired by a physician, to assist them in their living at Gaslight Apartments. Mobility impairment is described as a person who uses a wheelchair, walker, cane, crutches or has agate walking.

What will my rent be and how is it calculated?

Everyone’s rent is different because it is based on their income and medical expenses. When interviewed, we ask you to supply information regarding all forms of income you receive. Most information can be obtained by sending one of our forms to your contacts. We also use the number of monies that you pay “out of your own pocket” for medical needs. Again, we can send a form to your doctors and pharmacies to get the information we need. We then take your gross income amount and subtract a percentage of your medical costs. Your rent is then calculated on 30% of that adjusted total. Then each year we will interview you again and your rent will reflect changes in your income and expenses.

Do you allow pets?

Yes, a pet is allowed. There is a maximum deposit for a cat or dog of $150.00 due when the cat or dog is moved into the apartment. Other requirements exist and are contained in a Pet Policy which can be supplied upon request.

Can I make payments on the Pet Deposit?

Yes, $50 down and $10 monthly until paid in full.

Is there a lease?

Yes, there is a one year lease, but we understand the necessity of unanticipated move-outs.

How many keys do I receive?

Residents receive an apartment key, a key to a locked mailbox for your own apartment and a key to access the entrances. Our main entrance is intercom controlled and can be opened from within your apartment with the push of a button.

Is there a deposit required when moving in?

Yes, equal to one month’s rent.

Can I keep my own car to drive and what is the cost of parking?

Yes, you may use your own method of transportation whenever you wish. There is no charge to park at Gaslight Apartments. Our large parking lot is simply used on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Is there transportation at your facility?

Yes. We have a community van that makes shopping trips into Marion, Kokomo, or Wabash. There are also various services in our area that you may call to arrange transportation to/from medical appointments.

Are there any planned activities?

Yes, we print a monthly calendar showing the dates and times of various activities. Monthly activities include bingo, cards, puzzles, pot-lucks, seasonal parties, gardening, and knitting/sewing for our Project H.A.N.D.S. program. There is also a recreation room set up with various exercise equipment for you to use as you wish.

Are there on-site laundry facilities?

Yes, we have 3 washers and 3 dryers located in the laundry room in the center of our building. These are coin-operated and there is a sink for the convenience of our residents.

Do you have anyone there to help me?

To maintain the building on a regular basis, we have an office, maintenance, and janitorial staff. To help our residents meet all their needs, we also have a Social Service Coordinator here weekly. With her guidance, we can help make arrangements for our residents to receive in-home assistance from agencies that provide housekeeping, bathing help, or to assist with medical needs. If you have specific questions about how we can help, please contact us.
