What type of housing is Maple City Square? Is it low-income housing?

Maple City Square is a subsidized housing community for most low-income seniors 62 and older and 18 and older if mobility impaired. The term “subsidized housing” means that the rent is based on income. A resident pays approximately 30% of their adjusted income as rent.

Who pays the remainder of the rent?

If a resident qualifies, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a U.S. government agency, will pay the remainder of the rent.

How is rent calculated?

Resident rent is based on approximately 30% of the adjusted income. A good estimate of your rent would be to take 30% of your gross annual income, subtract out-of-pocket medical expenses paid, out of pocket, in the last 12 months and then divide by 12. This will give you an estimate of what your monthly rent could be.

What does the rent include?

Monthly rent includes: water, sewage, gas, recycle, refrigerator, stove, garbage disposal, drapery rods and use of the community rooms. Residents will pay their electric bill, phone expenses, cable if they elect to have it.

Is there a lease?

Yes, there is a one-year lease, then continues month to month. A 30-day notice is required to announce moving.

How many apartments are there?

Maple City Square has 29 apartments, twenty-one one-bedroom and eight large studio apartments. Two studio apartments and one, one-bedroom apartment are designed for persons who are mobility impaired.

How do I get started with the move-in process?

Just contact the office for an application. We would be very happy to give you a tour of the complex and show you the apartments. Simply fill out the application completely, sign it and mail it to the address provided on the last page of the application.  Tours are available Monday-Friday, 9am-1pm. It is best to call ahead so we can set up an apartment to be available.

Is there a waiting list for residency?

Yes, currently Maple City Square has a short waiting list.

What is the Security Deposit?

The security deposit is the same as one month’s full rent with a minimum of $50.

Do you allow pets?

Maple City Square welcomes you to bring your pet. There is a limit of one cat or dog per apartment with some restrictions. Please inquire about our Pet Policy during your call or on your tour.

What is the Pet Deposit?

The pet deposit is $150 for cats and dogs. Arrangements can be made to pay the deposit over time.

Is there additional storage space available?

There is no additional storage available, however, each style of apartment offers a large amount of closet and cabinet space.

Is there an elevator?

Yes, there is one elevator located in the front lobby easily accessible by all residents, on each floor.

Is parking available?

Yes, Maple City Square has a large parking lot with the resident area having preferred spaces nearest the building.

What is the cost of parking?

There is no cost for parking.

How many keys do I receive?

Residents receive an apartment key, a key to a locked mailbox for their apartment, and an access key and fob to the main entry. Our main entrance has a telephone for visitors to announce their arrival.

Are there any planned activities?

Maple City Square prints a monthly Newsletter with a calendar showing the dates and times of various activities. Monthly activities may include bingo, card games, board games, pot-luck meals, seasonal activities such as gardening, and knitting/sewing for our Project H.A.N.D.S. program. There is also a puzzle and craft area for doing puzzles and other various crafting projects.

Are there on-site laundry facilities?

There is a laundry center at Maple City Square. It contains a coin-operated washer and a coin-operated dryer with a folding table. This center is located on the ground floor near the elevator.

Is there any public transportation available?

Yes, currently the City of LaPorte has a transit service called TransPorte. This service stops at our door and takes residents directly to their destination. Seniors can purchase a discount multi-ride card.

Where are the closest shopping areas?

Several banks, pharmacies and grocery stores, and K-Mart are within walking distance to Maple City Square. Tired and burdened with your purchases, call TransPorte and they will pick you up at the store and bring you to the front door. The TransPorte staff are great at helping you and your packages into the building. A cart is available at the side door to take your purchases to your apartment.
